An intern’s work schedule shall be agreed in advance of the internship with their supervisor. Most of our internships are full-time, however some interns may work part-time based on an agreement with the supervisor and always in accordance with the normal working hours of the CTBTO.

Interns at CTBTO are granted two and a half days of leave per month starting from the first month of the internship.

The duration of an internship is normally not less than three months and not more than one year.

All applications are carefully reviewed for the respective vacancies. Due to the volume of applications received, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for further consideration. Successful applicants who are non-Austrian citizens are responsible for obtaining any necessary documents and visas that may be required for entering Austria before starting their internship.

Interns are required to participate in the Commission’s Group Medical Insurance scheme at their own cost, unless they provide proof of alternative equivalent medical insurance coverage.

For successful candidates who are offered an internship and who do not receive any other financial support from an institution, university or other source, a stipend of EUR 500 may be provided, subject to funds availability.

The stipend does not constitute a salary, but is rather an allowance to help to cover basic subsistence costs during the internship period.

An additional maximum of EUR 500 may be provided for accommodation upon submission of the appropriate proof of a rental agreement with a non-family third party.

Candidates will be asked during the application process whether they anticipate receiving financial support and how much. If an intern receives financial support from an institution, university or other source, they must provide all relevant documentation prior to commencing an internship with CTBTO.

Upon award of an internship, the intern shall be responsible for arranging their travel covering all travel costs to Vienna, Austria and living expenses during the internship period.

There should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship. Following the completion of the internship, an intern may be eligible to apply for vacant positions as external candidates, subject to CTBTO Regulations and Rules, including those governing required break in service of at least six months from the end of the internship to the beginning of any new employment with the Commission. A CTBTO internship is a valuable and well-regarded professional experience and may serve as the foundation for one’s professional career.
